George Soros is Back in American Politics

Soros, a billionaire investor had scaled back his donations to politics. However, in the just concluded US elections, he donated millions of dollars. Most of it was for supporting Hillary Clinton.

Soros and Donations

Soros donated over $25 million in support of Hillary and the Democratic Party. Those close to him said that they expected him to give even more as Election Day neared. He even planned to attend his first Democratic convention to watch Clinton accept the presidential nomination. However, he later changed his mind and kept clear of the event.

People close to him say that he has been more engaged in politics that he has been in the last few years. They said he was motivated by the fear of GOP candidate Donald Trump and his faith in Clinton. Even before Trump was nominated to be the GOP candidate, Soros was already actively supporting the democrats.

Other Donors Chipped in Too

Major donors to the Democratic Party were also writing big checks. For instance, an environmentalist from San Francisco donated almost $31cmillion in 2016. However, most of the money was directed towards a Super PAC that he controls. The cumulative mobilization of some of the biggest donors for the Democrats meant that Hillary had one of the best-funded campaigns in American politics.

Donation to Super PACs

Soros donated a good amount of cash to Super PACs. For instance, he donated $7 million to a PAC that was in support of Clinton. There were records that showed he intended to donate a further $3 million to the PAC. Soros Giving Was Reminiscent of 2004

In 2004, Soros was opposed to the Iraq war It prompted him to give a lot of money towards the election of John Kerry. However, that bid was ultimately unsuccessful. At the time, he described the Bush administration as similar to that of the Nazis.

Soros and Obama

Soros backed the election of Obama and his subsequent reelection. However, he said that he felt some regret over the decision not to support Hillary. According to him, he liked Hillary since she gave him an open door to talk about policy issues.

Soros Other activities

One of the courses that George Soros has been promoting of late is the End Citizen United course. The PAC received $5,000 from Soros, which was the maximum that he could give to them. The PAC aims to repeal the Supreme Court decision that made it possible for dark money to find its way into US politics.

Soros’ son would not comment about his father’s increased giving. However, he did point out an article that his father had written warning people about the possibility of a Trump or Ted Cruz presidency.
